Northfield, Vermont

Northfield is a lovely town on a well-kept green. Houses here fall in line with the classic New England image of clapboards and slate roofs. If it looks sleepy to passersby, those familiar see Norwich University as the strong, progressive heart of this community – offering military-based education alongside curricula for civilians. Norwich is the nation’s oldest private military college, started in 1819. Today, enrollment is split evenly between civilian students and the Corps of Cadets.
Northfield is home to Northfield Savings Bank and headquarters for TDS and Trans-Video. There are a variety of employers here, from Wall Goldfinger’s custom furniture to Cabot Hosiery’s Vermont-made socks. If you haven’t been Cabot Hosiery’s annual Sock Sale, please note that it is held the first two weekends of deer season in November. You really ought to go. Or, make it to the Labor Day celebration where you will see the new Cadets marching in straight lines after just one month of training. Recent changes bar local politicians from using the event for canvassing, but it is still one of the longest and proudest parades in the region.
The Dog River runs through Northfield alongside many wild explanations for how it got its name. The river once powered a series of mills, some of which are still visible today in the historic downtown. Today, the Dog is better known as a great place for fly fishing, swimming or a summer afternoon afloat on whatever raft you can procure.
